Such a/n/ice cold morning

Winter indeed. Dog walk at sunrise.

Neighbour’s lawn had an unauthorized visit by this Houdini pony. I was thinking just yesterday that we hadn’t seen him around for a while, he must have heard me!

After the storm

Absolutely not the worst one in the history of mankind, but probably the one that did most damage in our 11 years here.

drivhus

Riding ring fence broken. My little greenhouse was torn to pieces. Roof damage to the barn (flying tiles) and for myself a mangled right thumb. My stupid horses who were calm as can be in the pasture, but too fat to remain there all evening (as well as too near the disintegrating rooftop), decided to freak when I wanted to approach them in the paddock to come inside for hay – ground slippery as soap and down I went, thumb first…. Typing feels very odd without it, am constantly reminded to lift my cup with the other hand, and well, apple sauce, forget it, I can’t peel anything. Knitting? No way. Same goes for writing and drawing. I guess an overstretched ligament. Bummer. I iced it all evening, but it’s still quite swollen today.

I haven’t tried spinning, my left is my forward hand, but I think I probably handle the fiber more than I know with my right. Think I need 2 thumbs for teasing clumps of fleece for carding too? Perhaps I could pick up my lefthanded writing again which I practised when I broke my wrist 5 years ago. Just for laughs.

Guess I better visit the library…

Everyone else ok out there?

Stormskader

Monday morning

before the storm

After a fine weekend getting a few of the outdoor chores done, Sunday afternoon began to drizzle with high winds promised for Monday and Tuesday, possibly even a storm at some point. Must remember to fetch some more firewood! Sofa, blanket, fire, tea, knitting, a movie – not such a bad autumn vacation if you ask me.

I tried to play with some long exposure photography, only to find out that both my old tripods (one of them I bought used in 1987!) are dysfunctional. One is missing the gizmo that attaches the camera, the other one swivels horisontally by the slightest touch and won’t lock in place. I guess I have to do a bit of shopping with winter and low light on the doorstep if I want to try more than snaphots.

long exposure leaves - no photoshopping!

I also managed to harvest and use dye plants from the garden, but more about that later since the wool is still drying. I had to make quite a thick layer of fleece to fit everything on the clothes rack, so it’s going to take some time. That means the carder is also resting, because however long I’ve wanted one I don’t actually have any recently planned projects for it, and I’m rather in a picture mood at the moment. (until I’m not)

There’s a tweed yarn planned which involves carding silk noil into longer fibers, but all fiber I have is already blended or white, so that requires more dyeing. Well, technically I could start on the part of the fleece that was dyed last year. But that actually requires me to remove all my paint stuff, and I don’t want to right now. I think next week will be a good week!

But apart from 20-odd bushes that need to be moved, I think I’m pretty much done with reporting on outdoor activities this year. Time to look closer at the painting, the yarn and the Photoshopping. Suits me fine, I couldn’t care less about the garden right now…. Just need to make that apple sauce – perhaps today?

The little house in a field

Måske i dag?

My week in images

Making this post has made me realize two things: A. my life is very dull and onesided B. My mind is even narrower because of all the things I don’t think to take pictures of. I also realized B is perhaps just an excuse to not admit completely to A. I obviously can’t count either.

I don’t mean dull as in being bored or not doing many things, which I obviously do if you’ve been following along, but they do tend to revolve around the same. I seem to mostly be looking a plants and the sky and nothing much besides! Of course, that’s what we’ve got to look at out here. I need to drive to the “city” (18 km) for some bits and bobs but most importantly more hydrosulphite to make blue, but I never thought of taking pix there. We usually just go to the mall, quickly scoop up what we need and head back home. Not really worth looking at.

How often do you do extraordinary things?

The section of lawn that I killed off last year is all filled out, although not just with dye plants. In fact, the dye project seems to go not all that well. Plants are growing (in case of the japanese indigo, not growing, but surviving), but no flowers. The weld most likely won’t be useful until next year, but I did hope to finally harvest a lot of coreopsis. The marigold also aren’t looking very willing. I didn’t sow new Dyer’s Chamomile, there is still some in the abandonded veggie garden along with woad.

I took the opportunity of clear soil to bury a few old potatoes, replant my strawberry plants and some asparagus. Lettuces and spinach, kale, and this little experiment: The wilted stub of a used supermarket celery, now look what it’s doing after I planted it! Hopefully some radishes on the way too.

It’s still stormy and autumn like temperatures here (13 C yesterday), so I don’t spend much time outside actually. We’re putting up a temporary fence where the hedge died, so we have a corner of shade and quiet, vainly hoping we’ll actually get to use it. I think I’ve had 4 days’ use of our garden furniture this year! I believe it’s the third summer in a row that’s acting this ghastly, and I really, really dislike strong wind. We’ve also had snow 3 winters in a row now, very unusual.

Look how the pear tree has been shaped by the wind – despite a hedge!

Well, at least I have an excuse for knitting more sweaters since they’re now all year gear! I’m going to step up my needle sizes to be able to finish sooner…
