No acorns?

I was planning on dyeing with acorns this fall, we have a big old oak tree on one side of the property. I know it’s way too early to harvest, but as I was walking by the other day I was expecting to be able to see them at least.

  • That’s not too early, is it?
  • Is this a Danish, European, worldwide 2012 phenomenon or just my neck of the woods? Seems that none of the rowan trees in the area are showing much in the berry department either, now that I come to think of it, regardless of variety.
  • So those of you with oak trees around – take a walk and send me a report! Pls and thanku.

I did however on the same walk discover that one of our wild patches suddenly sports quite a few St. John’s Wort. Nearly all finished by now of course, but maybe they’ll come back now that they seem to have established themselves? Just have to keep hubby from mowing at the wrong time of year…

Meet the critters

This really has nothing to do with art or yarn, but since they’ve been such a big part of my life, I thought I’d introduce the inhabitants of this farm, my bestest friends in any weather, giving me much joy and much heartache.

Too many of them have passed in the last couple of years, so actually this is more like a memorial page. But so be it. Life at the moment is such that those who are gone have not been replaced….

Max

My baby. First and closest for nearly 12 years. He’s gone now this June and I don’t know if that chunk of my heart will ever grow back…. He will most likely appear in photos from around the place more than once, since he never left my side unless locked behind a door, and then he’d shout and whine until I let him back out. Or in. My sweet, giant puppy who thought he could fit in my lap… Rottweiler/Labrador mix.

Also known as Max Motor, Maxmeister, Maxenheimer, Maximax, Maximouse, Porridge Head, Ouchgeeroffofmyfoot!, Teddybear.

Little hedges

For a few years one end of our property (and the neighbours’) have been flooded in winter due to clogged drains in the fields. Most have been fixed, but eventually most of our hedges way up in the garden died because they were standing with their feet in the water followed by two very frosty winters.
So this summer we’re working on a new drain all the way from the garden to the low end of the farm where the big new drain is running. No point in getting a new hedge if the garden is a swamp 6 months out of 12! But the garden is much too windy without one. A hedge that is.

It’ll probably be a couple of years (they say) before we see the actual effect, so in the mean time I’ve decided to make new hedges, using what we already have, spiraea and ribes. For the lilacs I’ll have to see if any of them have sent out shoots that I can dig up and nurse a bit in a pot. I think I’m a bit late in the season to use cuttings?

Now only remains to be seen if I can actually remember to nurse them all through the winter…. At least if we don’t get frost, I have a self-watering greenhouse!

Sunday Swatch from The Shades

First, swatches of the day:

I did it. Curtains done and up, we have a shady spot again. Get the furniture out and we’ll be ready for a bit of summer…. (please) Yes, yes, I’ll stop moaning about the temperature already.

Next project, which I’m already working on but ran out of velcro, is a set of white (trying to be frugal and using what fabric I’ve got) curtains for the hammock – because of that dead hedge. Technically it was hubby’s birthday present last year, but it’s also my spot to read, make notes, meditate and hang out with the cat. It’s like taking a nap in a row boat! (I imagine)

HannibalAnd yes, I do spend time in the sun, but not while reading unless I’m craving a hangover. And in this windtunnel, sometimes shelter is absolutely necessary to be able to think straight!

Spinning in the wild

Ok, I admit I didn’t really go much further than my own back yard. But it’s definitely a wilderness behind our garage! There’s a shed where we keep garden furniture etc, a huge birch tree and lots of very tall weeds. We’d cleared an area earlier in the week for burying my beloved dog, and I realized what a lovely, shaded peaceful place it is back there.
