Just a few pix of the critters living around the property apart from my sassy tame ones. I spent yesterday spring cleaning the garden (first step), and frankly I’m too exhausted to talk. 😉

Get your pots and jars ready

Soon the plant dyeing season will be upon us, so it’s time to find yarns and get them mordanted (I always do this ahead of time and then just keep the labelled skeins on hand). This year I’ll be working with more natural mordants such as sea water, tannins, soy and rhubarb leaves.
I’m looking for cheap silk yarns and/or fabrics that I can cut into swatches to add to my sample library. As well as cotton.
I’m also going to help myself to some structure by creating a section for it here on the blog with an easy access plant list of which I’ve done and how, update my tags and some other stuff I’ve been thinking about, hoping that it might prove useful for other people as well. I have a few science experiments in mind that might interest you…
I take requests for topics! Who knows, maybe my library contains items I haven’t even thought about mentioning yet. But please be patient, I won’t be finishing this off in a day or two. In fact I’m feeling a bout of blog fatigue coming on, so we’ll see how it goes!

Fir cones
Gathered cones from what I assume is Picea abies, since that’s what they look like and what is most common in a Danish forest. Just a standard tap water simmer job, no research into pH or other methods.
Intense looking dyebath – will it take?
I wonder if they have more juice in them?
Ok result on mordanted Dorset. The orange stuff is same wool from a little madder pot, that I couldn’t be bothered sorting for the photo.
Unmordanted wool in the leftover dyebath, with an “exhausted” 35 g of madder thrown in as well. Half the skein dunked in iron water after, then rinsed. I normally let dry before I rinse, but, not today.

Fall forage
Just a bit of gathering while walking the dog, to keep me occupied during winter in case I get urges.
In addition to the chestnut hulls I brought home, I also gathered spruce cones from the forest.
AND I found one young alder tree on our property that had produced cones, so I got myself a bag of those too.
I then tried to strip the larch trees, but they were not quite ready to let go of their needles, and those which did mostly ended up on my sweater. Tricky! I’ll get back to them in a week or so.
Then I went foraging websites and ended up ordering this canning device with a thermostat, I’m guessing it’s real good for keeping madder root at it’s proper temp as well! Since the jars will be shut I’m wondering if I could use it for apple sauce too. Not sure if I’ve had actual mordants or acid dye in there, what do y’all think?
