Did you begin to think I’d given up on all the yarny stuff? Not so – just part of the cycle, a bit of this, some more of that, and on it goes.
It’s been so long since I’ve made yarn, because building the studio, because sciatica, because kittens vs. wheel climbing. Nearly had to give it a miss this time too because of a “sprained” wrist, but luckily it resolved itself with a day on ice.
But I just had to get my hands on that wool I dyed with my recent sock yarns. I’ve chain plyed and want to use it as – sock yarn! Now, I wonder if I can make my mum knit them up for me?
These two bobbins weigh exactly the same but show what happens when I haven’t spun in a long time: I start out with the intention of making a smooth semiworsted yarn and then after a while I default to my standard longdraw. So the blonde bobbin #2 probably has a much loftier single than #1. Comparing yardage is interesting as well as the finished socks, as I was planning to make one from each skein in an almost identically similar colour progression.
Result: the first skein is 82 g and 144 m, the second 83 g and 168 m, so a significant difference although I can’t visibly see it. (1750(1575) m/kg and 2000(1800) m/kg unwashed(washed). ~15 m “lost” per skein after a soak ) Should do well as insulator socks. 4 mm neddles?
Lovely! About time for wearing wool socks too, isn’t it! Very true, that life goes in fits and starts…. spinning for days on end , then onto rug hooking or something else. Glad you built that studio!
the yarn looks so pretty, and I am sure the socks will as well. Hope you can get your mom to knit them for you!
I wouldn’t mind knitting them myself, but I do hate turning the heel.
I have a pattern for ribbed tube socks – knit a toe, then knit ribbing straight up all the way. Haven’t made them for myself, so not sure how they bunch at the ankle, but they are easy to make.
Yeah, I did consider something like that. I’m just not happy with shortrows at all.
these socks have none – seriously, just a tube, around and around until you get bored/run out of yarn/get long enough. I will be making some for a niece sometime soon, I will share photos of them.
That’s gorgeous!
Looks beautiful.
Nydelige farger! Er det plantefarget?
Tak.
Good posts, beautiful blog.
Congratulations.
