Solstice

The shortest day yet
King Frost declines invitation
Green holidays ahead

A scent of Christmas
decorated forest floor
green tufts underfoot

Den korteste dag
Kong Frost takker nej til fest
Grøn jul i sigte

My interest in haiku a few weeks ago lasted exactly 2 days. Not that I don’t like them anymore, I just haven’t bothered. I think my brain simply thrives on new challenges? The thrill of firing untried combinations of neurons, no reason to go bungee jumping, you can get your kicks inside your own skull!

“Change all begins with thinking: we can immediately form new neurological connections and circuits that reflect our new thoughts. And nothing gets the brain more excited than when it’s learning – assimilating knowledge and experiences.” (“Breaking the Habit of Being Yourself” by Joe Dispenza)

It would seem, to stay alert and on your toes, learning new things is indeed the way to go. So I guess I’ll just carry on like I’ve always done, LOL. Multicraftual, multilingual, diving into all sorts of weird subjects just because. I read somewhere that bilingual people are less affected by Alzheimers and other forms of dementia because they have more word combinations to choose from. Well, I’ll have to get back to you on that one in 25-30 years, that is, if I remember to.

There will be more on this topic later as I hinted on Monday.

On a holiday note, well, I can eat good food and take a wee bit of time off (ok, the latter is untrue), but I don’t do holy days or anything ceremonial. I’m guessing most of you out there will be busy with your families the coming week, so I’m wishing you all the best and I hope to see everyone on the other side of xmas or in the new year! I’ll probably keep posting if I feel like it, regardless of a drop in readers, or I may not get enough uninterrupted time to do anything useful whatsoever.

I’m really looking forward to the afternoons getting longer, as my outside time is suffering, I go about my things in here and before I know it the sun is down. But outside things also wear me out physically, so it’s no use doing them in the morning, as I’ll then be napping most of the day.

Date night, a movie.
Off to see the bad dragon,
but not in 3D.

  1. Green here too, with overcast sky. But it sometimes has its own beauty, as with your tree photo, which is dramatic and striking.

I hope you enjoy the next weeks in ways you like.

We have a rest, but no family stuff. So I will likely continue pretty much as normal, too.

Wishing you everything you wish for yourself, for the holidays and for the coming year. Xx

  2. green and wet here, very mushy outside, the colours of your photos are similar to those outside my window, I stay home and the holiday is pretty much like any other day, so I will be reading and posting,
    happy solstice, Frances x

    1. Hi Frances, yes, a blustery and bleak day for sure, thank goodness for the woodstove. I’m playing with paper and coffee!

  3. It’s white and cold here. We have snow on the ground and the lake is frozen over. One of the neighbors shoveled a skating rink. We are not doing anything special for the holidays other than just enjoying each others company. Think long walks on the lake, good food and maybe some wine. Perfectly non commercial holiday.

  4. Over here we’re having a storm today, it is raining horizontally and the wind is howling outside – I quite like it, it’s very atmospheric and it makes a perfect day to be nesting inside. Husband and I are having a Finnish style Christmas eve meal today, after which we’ll go and spend a few days with the in-laws celebrating the Christmas English style. I’d love to have your style of Christmas, just having a quiet time without any fuss. Unfortunately, everyone else in the family insist Christmas must be celebrated thoroughly and would be very upset if I went on a Christmas strike, so I am going along with the usual traditions and waiting for the peaceful days afterwards…

    1. I used to do the charade too and just pretend I was in a bad movie. But I’ve become less adept at making the right faces, I just can’t be bothered. Hope you survive without being too exhausted! I hear you had another storm? Just windy here, hail and stuff.

    1. 🙂 It’s funny about the languages. While we talk about having natural talents, languages is something I always really had a knack for. But I never seriously considered a job using that talent, who wants to sit in an office translating dull business letters all day, or repeat somebody else’s conversations without having any input yourself? But it’s curious how the wheel turns, my knowledge of Swedish led to a very nice job in computer tech because they needed someone who could talk to the clients, then I just had to learn all the rest on the go. (I was 6 months into my first PC at the time)

  5. awesome post, Pia… @”I read somewhere that bilingual people are less affected by Alzheimers and other forms of dementia because they have more word combinations to choose from.” – yeah, I did read that, too… I speak several languages, so I do hope it’s true! 🙂 I do like your style of writing… friendly hugs, Mélanie

P.S. I’ve just spent 7 days in Gran Canaria, Canary islands and I met Danish and Norwegian families, but the Germans have really “colonized” las Canarias these past 20 years, they’re in majority everywhere, on each island… 😀
